CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Here’s the straight answer: we stock CertainTeed-compatible underlayment and decking on our trucks, and most underlayment and deck repair jobs in Los Angeles run between $900 and $2,800 installed, depending on how much decking has to come out and whether the underlayment failure reaches the eaves or valleys. Most jobs are completed in a single day once we’re on the roof, and every repair carries a written guarantee before our crew leaves your property. You’ll usually discover the problem the same way most LA homeowners do: a ceiling stain after the first real rain, or a shingle that looks lifted from the ground and turns out to be sitting on a soft, waterlogged deck board. CertainTeed shingles are built to last, but they can only do their job if what’s underneath them is still doing its job.

We’re an independent roofing contractor in Los Angeles. We install and repair CertainTeed underlayment and decking, and we’re not affiliated with CertainTeed Corporation. That means we’ll tell you the truth about what failed, what it costs, and what actually needs to happen, not what a manufacturer’s rep wants sold that month.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

If your roof was installed with CertainTeed shingles, the underlayment beneath is most often one of three CertainTeed products: RoofRunner, DiamondDeck, or WinterGuard. RoofRunner is the synthetic underlayment you’ll see on most CertainTeed residential installs in Los Angeles County. DiamondDeck is the higher-end synthetic with a slip-resistant surface, and WinterGuard is the peel-and-stick ice and water shield used in valleys, around chimneys, and along eaves, though in LA it’s used more for wind-driven rain protection at roof edges than for ice.

The compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit is this: CertainTeed shingles carry a limited lifetime warranty, but that warranty covers the shingles only. The underlayment and decking are separate products with separate lifespans, and if the decking failed because a previous roofer didn’t replace delaminated plywood before laying new underlayment, the shingle warranty won’t cover the repair. We see this on re-roofs across Los Angeles, from Encino to Glendale to Westchester, where a new shingle layer was laid over decking that should have been condemned on the spot.

For decking, CertainTeed doesn’t manufacture OSB or plywood. The decking is a structural product, usually 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch CDX plywood or 7/16-inch OSB, and the correct replacement is matched to what’s already on the roof so the deck height stays consistent and the shingles lay flat. If the existing deck is 1/2-inch and someone patches in 5/8-inch, you’ll get a visible hump and a shingle line that never looks right. We measure before we quote, every time.

When it comes to underlayment, the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision in Los Angeles usually comes down to warranty paperwork and roof pitch. If you’re within your CertainTeed warranty period and want the system warranty intact, we’ll use the matching CertainTeed underlayment. If the warranty has run its course, quality aftermarket synthetics from GAF, Owens Corning, or other manufacturers we stock can perform just as well at a slightly lower material cost. We’ll show you both numbers before you decide.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Dark stains or moisture rings on your ceiling after rain. This is water that has already worked through the shingles, past the underlayment, and through the decking into your attic. By the time you see it indoors, the deck is almost certainly damaged and the underlayment has failed in that spot. Don’t wait; next rain, it gets worse.
  • Shingles that look wavy, buckled, or uneven from the ground. In Los Angeles, we see this most often on hillside homes in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, and the Hollywood Hills where heat cycles and poor attic ventilation have warped the decking underneath. A wavy shingle line is a deck problem, not a shingle problem.
  • Granules in your gutters every time you clean them. CertainTeed shingles shed some granules over their life, but a heavy, consistent pile means the shingles are flexing too much because the deck under them has softened. Soft decking in the LA climate usually means water has been getting under the underlayment for a while.
  • You can see or feel daylight through the attic roof boards. Go up on a bright day and look. If you can see light between the sheathing boards, water isn’t far behind it, and the underlayment is the only thing standing between your attic and the next storm.
  • Interior paint bubbling or drywall tape separating at ceiling corners. This is a signature sign on flat-roof and low-slope additions, common on Los Angeles homes from the 1950s and 1960s. The underlayment has given out at the joint, and moisture is migrating into the house framing. You can’t fix this with paint.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, underlayment and deck repair for a typical 1,500 to 2,000 square foot home generally runs between $900 and $2,800. The spread depends almost entirely on how much decking has to be torn out and replaced. A small repair around a pipe boot or skylight might run $400 to $700. A valley replacement with new WinterGuard and a sheet of plywood usually lands between $800 and $1,200. A larger deck failure affecting 200 square feet or more can push past $2,500.

What’s included in our price: the decking and underlayment materials themselves, dump fees for the damaged material, re-nailing or re-installing the CertainTeed shingles in the repair area, and clean-up. Every repair is written out as a line-item quote before we start. No change orders. No surprise add-ons. The written guarantee is in your hands before the crew packs up, and if the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

  • Small isolated deck patch + underlayment: $400 – $700
  • Valley repair with new ice & water shield: $800 – $1,200
  • Deck replacement around penetrations (pipe, vent, chimney): $600 – $1,400
  • Larger deck failure, 100 – 200+ sq ft re-decked: $1,800 – $2,800

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a right way and a fast way to get an eye on your decking, and the fast way is the one that puts you on a ladder with a pry bar. Most Los Angeles homeowners are better off letting us inspect it, because we can see the failure mode without opening the roof, and our inspection and estimate are free. What you can safely do yourself: go into the attic on a bright day and look for light gaps or staining, and walk the perimeter of the house after a rain to watch for missing shingle tabs or lifted edges. That’s useful information to have before you call.

What goes wrong with DIY here: cutting back shingles to patch decking without a proper overlap means the next rain gets under the patch. Working on a steep Los Angeles hillside roof without the right harness and roof brackets is how people end up in the ER. CertainTeed shingles are not nailed down casually; doing this wrong voids whatever warranty is left and often creates a leak where there wasn’t one. Tell you the price before we touch the roof, that’s the only way we know how to start. Call us at (213) 674-2890 and we’ll look before you lift a single shingle.
