CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent systems throughout Los Angeles, with most complete installations running between $425 and $780 for a typical 1,500 to 2,500 square foot home. We carry the CertainTeed RidgeFlex and Filtered Ridge Vent profiles on the truck, and in most LA neighborhoods we can be on-site within 48 hours to assess what you’ve got. Most homeowners call us because they’ve either spotted granules piling up in the gutter below the ridge, noticed a musty smell in the attic in August, or had a home inspector flag the ridge vent as failing before a sale.
Here’s the thing about ridge vents in Los Angeles: our summers don’t just test them, they bake them. The UV exposure at the ridgeline is brutal, and once the filter fabric inside the vent clogs with dust kicked up from the Santa Anas, the whole system stops breathing. A ridge vent that isn’t moving air isn’t doing its job, and in LA’s dry heat that means an attic that hits 140°F by noon, which pushes your AC bill up and bakes your shingles from underneath, shortening their life. If you’re starting to see any of that, this page will walk you through what to check, what it costs, and what we do differently.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed has made a few different ridge vent lines over the years, and we see all of them on roofs across Los Angeles. The two most common are CertainTeed RidgeFlex and the newer CertainTeed Filtered Ridge Vent (often listed by its part codes, including the 9-inch and 11-inch widths). There’s also the older ShingleVent II series still up on some roofs from the early 2000s, and that one has a compatibility gotcha if you’re pairing it with a new shingle layer: the profile height doesn’t match current shingle thicknesses, so you can’t just butt new shingles against it and call it good.
Identifying what you have is straightforward if you know what to look for. The ridge cap shingles sit on top of the vent, and underneath you’ll see the vent body with a fabric filter edge. Most CertainTeed units have the name or a part number stamped on the underside of the plastic extrusion. If the stamp is gone, measure the exposed vent width: 9 inches is most common on LA tract homes built after 1995, 11 inches on larger custom homes. Here’s the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision in plain terms: CertainTeed’s own replacement units run $85 to $140 for a 20-foot section, and quality aftermarket equivalents (like the Lomanco or Air Vent equivalents we also stock) run $60 to $95. They work, but if your roof still has an active CertainTeed warranty, using non-CertainTeed parts can muddy a shingle claim. We’ll tell you which way to go after looking at your roof, not before.
Tilehurst Roofing Los Angeles is an independent service provider and not affiliated with CertainTeed. We just stock and install their products, along with GAF and Owens Corning, because we’d rather let the product fit the home than force whatever’s on the truck.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Granules collecting in the gutter directly below the ridge. This isn’t always the vent itself failing, but it tells us the ridgeline shingles are degrading faster than the rest of the roof, which is what happens when the vent isn’t releasing heat properly and the ridge cap bakes from below.
- Attic smell that’s gone from dry to musty. Ridge vents only work when air can move up and out. If the filter fabric is clogged with fine LA dust, the attic becomes a still box, and even small amounts of trapped moisture start to smell. In a normally dry city like Los Angeles, that smell is a loud warning.
- Visible cracks or warping on the vent extrusion itself. Walk around the side of your house where you can see the ridge line. If the vent plastic is cracked, curling at the ends, or sagging between the shingles, the seal is broken and rain can find its way into a gap that should only be moving air.
- Your upstairs runs noticeably hotter than downstairs in summer, year after year. A working ridge vent paired with soffit vents creates a steady draw that pulls hot air out. When the ridge vent fails, that draw collapses, and the upstairs becomes the hotbox. What started as a $500 vent replacement becomes a conversation about attic insulation and shingle life.
- A home inspection report flags “inadequate ridge ventilation” before a sale. We get calls from homeowners and realtors on this one every week in Los Angeles. The inspector doesn’t need to know the brand to know the vent is old, clogged, or shrinking. We quote the replacement, and the deal stays on track.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-family home in Los Angeles, installed CertainTeed ridge vent replacement runs between $425 and $780 for the vent itself, including the ridge cap shingles that go back over it. If the existing ridge cap is still in good shape and just the vent underneath failed, you’re looking at the lower end, $425 to $550. If the cap shingles are baked and need replacing too, add $150 to $300 for materials and labor. Every quote breaks out parts and labor separately so you see exactly what you’re paying for, and the written price lands in your hands before any work starts. What’s included in that number: removal of the old vent, inspection of the roof decking along the ridge to catch any rot before it spreads, installation of the new CertainTeed or equivalent vent, new ridge cap shingles as needed, and clean-up. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and the repair gets a written guarantee before the crew leaves your property, not mailed later.
Two things push the price up in LA specifically: two-story homes with a steep pitch (greater than 6/12) cost more because of staging and fall protection, and homes near the coast with rusted-through fasteners sometimes need extra decking work where the old nails pulled up. Greg Holloway will tell you what yours needs after he’s on the roof, not before.

Ridge vent replacement is not a safe DIY job. You’re working at the highest point of your roof, which on most Los Angeles homes means a fall height of 15 to 25 feet onto whatever surface is below. The trade school way of saying it: falls from roof edges are the most common cause of serious injury in residential construction, and the ridge is where every fall starts. Beyond the safety issue, there’s a technical one: if the new vent’s profile height doesn’t match your shingle profile, or if the cut slot along the ridge is too wide or too narrow, you’ve created a leak that will show up in the next big rain. What you can safely do from the ground: check whether you can see cracks, warping, or sagging along the ridge line, and check the gutters below the ridge for a heavy granule buildup. If you see either, the next step isn’t a ladder, it’s a phone call. The best way to know what’s actually failing is to have a qualified roofer put eyes on it, and we’re happy to do that for free. FAQs
The vent itself typically lasts 15 to 20 years in Los Angeles, but the filter fabric inside can clog well before that, especially in the dry, dusty conditions we get in the Valley and inland areas. The ridge cap shingles over it wear faster than the field shingles because of the heat concentration at the peak, so we often see cap shingles failing in 10 to 12 years while the vent body is still sound. Call (213) 674-2890 for an exact assessment of yours.
If the failure is just a section of cracked plastic or a short run of blocked filter fabric, we can sometimes section in a repair, but with ridge vents the damage is rarely contained to one spot by the time it’s visible from the ground. The vent is one continuous piece along the ridge, so most jobs are full replacements, which is why we price them as such. We’ll tell you honestly if a section repair makes sense when we’re on the roof.
Most Los Angeles homes take half a day from start to finish: we remove the old vent and ridge cap, inspect the decking under the ridge, install the new vent, and shingle the cap back over it. Larger two-story or steep roofs take a full day because of the staging and safety work involved.
Yes, we stock the CertainTeed RidgeFlex and Filtered Ridge Vent in the common 9-inch and 11-inch widths on the truck, along with GAF and Owens Corning equivalents. If your roof needs an odd size or an older profile like the ShingleVent II, we source it locally within a day or two. Estimates are free.

Call (213) 674-2890 for a free estimate, and we’ll get eyes on your ridge, put a written number in your hand, and leave you with a vent that moves air like it’s supposed to.
