Tamko Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your Tamko ridge vent is cracked, lifting, or letting water into the attic, we stock Tamko-compatible ridge vent material and install it throughout Los Angeles, typically for $380 to $740 depending on the ridge length and the condition of the shingles around it. Most replacements on a standard single-story home with up to 40 linear feet of ridge run in that range, and we’re on the roof the same week you call, not three weeks out. Owners usually discover the problem one of three ways: a leak stain on the ceiling near an exterior wall, granules and plastic shards in the gutter after a Santa Ana wind event, or a roofer pointing it out during an unrelated inspection.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko makes two ridge vent lines that account for nearly every installation we replace in Los Angeles County: the Tamko Metal-Aire, which has an aluminum base that gets nailed down first and a shingle-over cap that sits on top, and the Tamko Vent-Aire, a roll-form plastic vent that gets a Tamko Hip & Ridge cap shingle applied over it. The Metal-Aire comes in 4-foot sections that nest into each other, and the spec you need if you’re measuring your existing vent is the 9-inch width with a 1-3/4-inch profile at the peak. The Vent-Aire rolls out in 20-foot lengths and requires at least 2 inches of vent opening cut along the ridge before it goes down.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see regularly: a Tamko ridge vent that was installed with a competitor’s ridge cap shingle, like an Owens Corning or GAF cap, tends to fail years before either product would fail on its own. The cap shingle’s sealant strip doesn’t always bond well to the Tamko vent’s plastic or metal surface, and that’s how you get a cap that looks fine from the street but has been flapping loose for months. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Tamko, which means we tell you exactly what’s on your roof without a brand agenda. If the original installer matched products correctly and the vent is still intact, we’ll patch around it. If the vent itself is brittle or cracked, we replace it.

Signs Your Tamko Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Ceiling stains near vaulted or cathedral ceilings. Water entering at the ridge travels down rafters before it shows up on drywall, so the stain often appears far from the actual failure point. You’ll feel the drywall softness before you see a color change in many cases.
  • Plastic or aluminum shards in the gutter after wind. In Los Angeles, our Santa Ana gusts regularly hit 40 to 50 mph in the foothills, and brittle ridge vent sections snap at fastener points before anything else on the roof moves. If you’re finding little gray or silver bits in the downspout, that’s your vent, not leaves.
  • Attic heat you can feel through the ceiling in summer. A ridge vent that’s collapsed or blocked stops exhausting hot air, and the attic becomes an oven. If your upstairs hallway floor feels warm to bare feet in August and the vent looks flattened at the peak, the heat load is already costing you AC efficiency.
  • Ridge cap shingles lifting or curling at the peak. The cap shingle is glued to the vent, not to the roof deck, so when the vent fails, the cap comes with it. Look for a wavy line along the ridge where the shingles should sit dead flat.
  • Attic moisture and rust on nail heads during winter months. Without a functioning intake-to-exhaust path, the moisture from showers and cooking condenses on the underside of the roof deck. If you look up and the roofing nails are rusting from the inside, your ventilation has been off for at least a full season.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, installed Tamko ridge vent replacement runs $380 to $740 for most homes. At the low end, that’s a straight vent swap with existing ridge cap shingles still in good shape and less than 25 linear feet of ridge. At the high end, you’re looking at 40-plus linear feet, old cap shingles that need replacing, and possibly a section of rotted decking at the ridge that has to come out first. So: the long end and the rotted decking are what push it past $600, and we’ll show you photos of the damage before we touch it. Every quote is written, line-itemed, and in your hands before any work starts. The labor includes removal of the failed vent, inspection of the ridge opening, replacement of the vent with Tamko-compatible material, new cap shingles matched to your existing roof color, and cleanup with a magnet sweep for old nails. If the repair fails inside one year for any reason related to our workmanship, we come back at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and that’s in writing before the crew leaves your driveway.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can do safely from the ground or a ladder: check the ridge line with binoculars for obvious lifting, missing cap shingles, or visible cracks in the vent material. Check the gutters for vent debris. And check the attic for water staining along the peak. What you should not do is walk a ridge to try to re-nail a vent that’s come loose. Roof work at the ridge means working at the highest, most exposed point of the roof, and a ridge vent that’s failed is often sitting over decking that’s soft from water intrusion. One foot through a soft spot and you’re not saving money, you’re in an ambulance. If you found the problem from the ground, call (213) 674-2890 and we’ll put it back right. Most ridge vent replacements on Los Angeles homes are done in half a day.
