Tamko Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Tamko shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs between $450 and $1,400 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and what’s underneath them. We carry Tamko-compatible replacements on our trucks and can match most Heritage and Elite series shingles same-week, often same-day if we’re already working in your neighborhood. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover the problem the hard way: shingle granules in the gutter after a Santa Ana wind event, a water stain on the ceiling after the first real rain in months, or a bare patch on the roof visible from the driveway that wasn’t there last spring.
Here’s the thing about Tamko shingles in LA. They’re a solid product line, but our climate does specific things to them. The UV load from roughly 280-plus sunny days a year bakes the asphalt over time, which causes granule loss and eventual cracking. When one Tamko shingle goes, it’s rarely alone. The neighbors on either side of it are usually close behind, and that’s what drives the repair range.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
We work on Tamko’s two main architectural lines: Heritage and Elite. Most Los Angeles homes with Tamko roofs have Heritage Woodgate or Heritage Rustic Slate, though we see Elite Glass-Seal on some newer builds in the Valley and up in the foothills. If you don’t know which one you have, flip over a loose shingle. Tamko stamps the series name on the underside of the mat, and Heritage shingles measure roughly 13¼ inches wide by 39⅜ inches long. Elite runs a touch larger at 13¼ by 40 inches. It matters because the exposure, the part you see, changes how many bundles and how the repair blends.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question, we’re direct with every customer: for Tamko, we recommend OEM or Tamko-approved compatible shingles every time. Aftermarket generics rarely match the exact granule blend, and a patch that’s two shades off is visible from the street for years. That said, we’re an independent roofing company, not affiliated with Tamko directly, so we tell you the honest tradeoff: OEM costs 10 to 20 percent more, but the color match is as close as you can get. We keep Heritage Woodgate, Heritage Rustic Slate, and Elite Glass-Seal slate in stock at our Los Angeles yard because those are the three we replace most often.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout bases. Tamko shingles shed granules as they age, especially after heat cycles. If you see a pile of dark granules below one downspout, the shingles above that section are past their useful life, and water is now hitting the asphalt mat directly.
- Curling or “fishmouth” corners. In Los Angeles, this is almost always heat-related delamination. The shingle’s asphalt layer separates from the fiberglass mat at the edges, and wind gets under it. Once edges lift more than a quarter inch, the shingle is done.
- Cracking or splitting down the shingle face. Straight-line cracks along the shingle’s exposed portion mean the shingle can’t flex with the roof deck anymore. Temperature swings between day and night in the Valley accelerate this. Cracked shingles don’t seal, and water walks right through them.
- Missing shingles after wind events. Santa Ana winds in October through December regularly rip loose Tamko shingles whose sealant strip has given out. If you find shingles in the yard after a windstorm, check the roof immediately because the exposed nails and underlayment below are now taking direct water.
- Dark stains or soft spots on the ceiling inside. This is the one nobody wants. By the time water shows up indoors, the shingle has been compromised for a while, and the decking underneath may have started to rot. In Los Angeles, leaks often show up after the first heavy rain in November because the summer heat has been doing quiet damage for months.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Tamko shingle repair in Los Angeles, a small section of up to about 10 shingles typically runs $450 to $750. A larger repair of 10 to 25 shingles with underlayment replacement lands between $750 and $1,400. Here’s what moves the number:
- How many shingles failed. Tamko bundles are priced per square, which is 100 square feet, and partial bundles still cost us the same. Repairing 3 shingles and repairing 18 shingles isn’t a straight-line price difference.
- Underlayment condition. If the shingles are gone but the felt underneath is still solid, the repair is fast. If the underlayment is torn or dry-rotted, we replace it before new shingles go down, and that adds materials and labor.
- Slope and access. Los Angeles roofs are all over the map. A one-story ranch in Reseda is a quick ladder job. A hillside home in Eagle Rock with a 7/12 pitch needs fall protection and more time.
- Decking damage. If water has been getting under the shingles for a while, the plywood underneath may need a section replaced. That’s usually $75 to $120 per 4-by-8 sheet installed, and it’s the honest reason some repairs cost more than neighbors expect.
Every repair includes the written price before any work starts, the shingles, the install, disposal, and a written guarantee on the repair before our crew leaves your property. If the repair fails inside a year, we’re back at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. Tell you the price before we touch the roof, that’s the only way we know how to start.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the inspection. Walk the perimeter, use binoculars from the ground, and look for missing shingles, lifted edges, or granule piles in the gutters. What you shouldn’t do is go up on a steep Los Angeles roof with a bundle of shingles under one arm. Beyond the fall risk, which is real and permanent, the bigger problem is what you can’t see from the surface: torn underlayment, failing sealant strips on the surrounding shingles, or nail pops that will leak in six months.
We’ve fixed plenty of DIY patches where a homeowner nailed new Tamko shingles over damaged felt and the leak came right back. Matching Tamko’s granule color, getting the nail pattern right, and replacing the underlayment correctly is skilled work. If you’re comfortable checking from the ground, do that. If you want it done once, call Greg and the team at (213) 674-2890 and we’ll come look.
FAQs
How long should Tamko shingles last in Los Angeles? Tamko Heritage shingles carry a 30-year prorated warranty, but in Los Angeles real-world life is closer to 18 to 22 years because constant UV exposure and heat cycling age the asphalt faster than in milder climates. Granule loss starts becoming visible around year 12 to 15, and that’s when most owners need their first targeted repair rather than a full replacement.
Can you repair a few Tamko shingles instead of replacing the whole roof? Yes, as long as the decking and underlayment underneath are still sound and the surrounding shingles still have sealant integrity. We’ll patch a localized failure any day. But if multiple areas have granule loss across different slopes, that’s a sign the whole roof is nearing the end, and a full Tamko replacement is often the smarter money. Call (213) 674-2890 and we’ll give you a straight read on which one makes sense.
How long does a Tamko shingle repair take? Most Los Angeles Tamko shingle repairs take 2 to 4 hours from setup to clean-up. Bigger repairs with underlayment replacement or decking work can run a full day. We show up in the window we gave you, and we leave your yard and walkways cleaner than we found them.
Do you stock Tamko shingles, or do you have to order them? We stock the three Tamko architectural blends we see most often in Los Angeles: Heritage Woodgate, Heritage Rustic Slate, and Elite Glass-Seal slate. If your roof is a less common color or a discontinued run, we order it and it’s typically on site within 3 to 5 business days. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in when we give you the written price.
