Owens Corning Roof Replacement in Los Angeles: What to Know First
Owens Corning roof replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $14,500 to $28,000 for a full tear-off and re-shingle on a standard 1,800 to 2,400 square foot home, depending on which shingle line you choose and what the decking looks like once we pull the old roof. Most jobs take three to five working days from tear-off to final inspection. We’re an independent Owens Corning service provider, which means we install their products, we know their failure patterns, but we don’t answer to their corporate office. We answer to you, and we put the price in writing before any work starts. If you’re weighing repair against replacement, or you’ve got a second estimate that doesn’t match the first one, call (213) 674-2890 and we’ll give you the straight answer.
How Owens Corning Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
- Duration Series granule loss and premature balding. The Duration line carries a lot of weight in LA because the SureNail strip holds up to the Santa Ana gusts, but we see granule shedding faster than expected on homes within a few blocks of the 405 and the 10, where constant exhaust and brake dust sit on the roof. The granules don’t just wear off from rain; airborne grit grinds them down over a decade. When we tear off a Duration roof that’s gone smooth in patches, the fix is full replacement with a fresh Duration or Duration Flex install, plus a conversation about future wash-downs to slow the same wear.
- TruDefinition Duration color fading on south-facing slopes. Owens Corning bakes their color into the mat, but no shingle fully escapes a hillside in Studio City or Sherman Oaks that takes direct sun from noon to six. We see Duration designer colors, especially the deeper browns and blues, lighten unevenly after eight to twelve years. The shingle still sheds water fine, but the homeowner is looking at a patchy roof. Replacement is the only real fix when fading becomes the complaint. We help clients pick a lighter or cool-roof rated color if they want longer visual life on the second roof.
- Oakridge nail-strip overdriving. The Oakridge series is Owens Corning’s workhorse, and it’s a decent shingle, but we regularly pull Oakridge roofs where the previous installer buried the nails through the strip. Overdriven nails weaken the seal and let the shingle lift in wind. Once they’re compromised, you can’t re-nail them back to original holding strength. The fix on an Oakridge roof with widespread lifting is a tear-off and proper reinstall with correct nailing pressure and pattern. This is one of the most common second-opinion calls we get in Los Angeles.
- Supreme asphalt shingle seal failure on shallow-pitch roofs. The Supreme line shows up on a lot of older LA bungalows with slopes right at the 2:12 minimum for asphalt. On a shallow roof, water moves slowly, and if the seal strip lets go, moisture works sideways into the lap joints. We see this on homes in West Adams and Leimert Park where original 1950s roofs were redone in Supreme during a mid-2000s renovation. By the time we’re called, there’s staining at the eaves and the shingles are brittle. Full replacement, often with a reinforcement of the underlayment, is the answer.
- VentSure intake failure and attic heat damage. Owens Corning’s VentSure ridge and intake vents work well when paired correctly, but a roof is only as good as its ventilation. We see Owens Corning shingle roofs in Los Angeles with premature curling and cracking that trace back to a choked soffit or a ridge vent cut too narrow. The shingle wasn’t the problem; the heat trapped under the decking cooked it from below. When we replace, we check the vent math first and won’t lay a new Owens Corning roof over a ventilation system that’s going to kill it in ten years.

Our Owens Corning Roof Replacement Process
- 1
We come out and look at the roof without charging you for the diagnostic. We check the shingle condition, the decking from the attic side where possible, the flashing at chimneys and valleys, and the vent run. We also ask how long you’ve been in the house and whether you know the roof’s age. That tells us a lot.
- 2
We write the price. Not a ballpark. A fixed, line-item price for the tear-off, the decking replacement footage we anticipate, the underlayment, the Owens Corning shingle line you pick, the edge metal, the ridge cap, and the haul-away. You get it in writing before anything starts. If we find decking rot under the old roof, we price the extra wood per sheet in that same document so you know the rate, not just a surprise total.
- 3
We tear off and inspect the decking. Old shingles come off, and we look at the plywood or plank underneath. In Los Angeles we see a lot of delamination on older plywood from decades of heat and the occasional wet winter. Rotted or delaminated sections get replaced before the new roof goes down.
- 4
We install the new Owens Corning roofing system. Underlayment to code, leak barrier at the eaves and valleys, drip edge, starter strip, the shingles with correct nail placement, ridge cap, and flashing re-bedded where needed. We install to Owens Corning’s published specs because that’s what protects the warranty.
- 5
We test and detail. We inspect every slope, check the nailing pattern, confirm the ridge vent is drawing air, and run a magnet sweep for stray nails from the gutters, walkways, and planting beds around the house.
- 6
We put the guarantee in writing and hand it to you before the crew leaves. If something isn’t right inside the 365-Day Done Right Promise window, we come back and fix it at no charge. No mailed warranty book weeks later; you have it the day we finish.

Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call Tilehurst Roofing Los Angeles for Owens Corning Work
We’re owned and operated under the Kingswell family of roofing companies, which has been doing residential roofs since 2000, but the reason people call us isn’t the founding date. It’s that we show up in the window we said we would, and we don’t change the price at the door. Greg Holloway, our owner, learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and has spent over a decade on roofs across this county, from torch-down flat roofs in Mid-City to clay tile on Eagle Rock hillsides. A live person answers our phones 24 hours a day, and that’s not a call center; it’s someone who knows roofing calls. We stock and install Owens Corning as one of seven major lines we carry, including GAF and CertainTeed, because the right shingle for a Westside craftsman isn’t automatically the right shingle for a Tarzana ranch. We set up the crew, write the price, put the guarantee in writing, and back it with the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge.
FAQs
No. Owens Corning’s shingle warranty covers the material as long as it’s installed by a licensed contractor following their published installation specs. An independent Owens Corning service provider like Tilehurst Roofing Los Angeles can install to those specs without being a factory-certified installer. Owens Corning’s highest-level warranties may require specific accessories or specific contractor status, so if you want the top-tier material warranty, tell us before we quote and we’ll build the job to match.
If the roof is newer and the shingle color is still in production, a partial repair can match close enough that you won’t see the new sections from the ground. We install Owens Corning shingles with the same line and color whenever possible. But on an older roof with granule loss, color fading, or brittle shingles, the fix isn’t a patch; it’s a replacement. A new shingle on an old roof stands out, and it doesn’t fix the decking, the underlayment, or the ventilation underneath. Call (213) 674-2890 and we’ll tell you honestly whether patch or full replacement is the right spend.
In our climate, an Owens Corning asphalt shingle roof lasts 18 to 25 years depending on the line, the pitch, the sun exposure, and whether the attic is properly ventilated. Duration roofs on well-ventilated homes with moderate sun can push past 20 years. Oakridge and Supreme roofs on south-facing slopes with poor venting often need replacement at 15 to 18. The California sun is the biggest factor, not the rain. A roof that bakes every afternoon ages faster than one shaded by mature trees.
Yes. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and make sure the roof passes before we call the job done. Los Angeles requires permits for full roof replacements, and the city’s inspectors check the nailing, the underlayment, and the flashing. We don’t skip that step and leave you with a paper problem when you sell. The permit cost is in your written estimate, and the inspection is scheduled before the crew leaves.
Ready for a real number? Call (213) 674-2890 and we’ll set up a free estimate. Greg Holloway will tell you the price before we touch the roof – that’s the only way we know how to start.
